7 Beautiful Art Cars
Some cars are more than just a means of transport. In fact, brands like BMW, Lexus and Acura have made a killing making cars that are more of a luxury. Of course, it is only a matter of time before art collaborations with luxury cars would come, which would later become known as art cars. Whether for mere aesthetics, artistic expression or other reasons, art cars are here to stay. There are many out there but we decided to round up 7 that truly captured our eye.
1. Citroën 2CV (Andy Saunder)
The Picasso car or at least that’s what mechanic Andy Saunder wanted us to think. Supposedly designed with cubism in mind, this er… creation truly pushed the boundaries of what is possible in car design. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is anyone’s guess.
2. Hyundai i20 (Beastman and Numskull)
This one hails from the Land Down Under where Sydney-based artists Beastman & Numskull (admit it, you wish you had cool artist names like these guys) were asked by Hyundai to paint this i20 and a matching wall mural for a promotional campaign. Certainly eye-catching.
3. Audi A1 (Damien Hurst)
Looking more like a paint spilling accident rather than a work of art, British modern artist Damien Hurst designed this one for Sir Elton John’s AIDS Foundation (EJAF). Hurst spin painted this Audi-sponsored, which was auctioned off for a cool 420,000 Euros (~$520,000). Whatever your opinion of the paint job, at least it did something for charity right?
4. Tesla Roadster (Laurence Gartel)
Psychedelic or Kaleidoscopic are probably the words that come to mind when one sees this collaboration between Tesla Motors and digital artist Laurence Gartel. That’s vinyl wrapping in case you were wondering how the digital comes into play.
5. McLaren F1 César (César Baldaccini)
Now this one looks more like a bad ass paint job than something done for “artistic purposes”. Nevertheless, the McLaren F1 César was going for a translucent look. Yeah we don’t get it either but we’d be lying if we did not think that paint job is wicked cool.
6. Mini Cooper (Fabian Bertschinger)
During it’s 50th Anniversary celebration (pre and post BMW acquisition), MINI launched it’s Wash Me Campaign wherein they gathered several artists to paint Mini Coopers. Think of it as a high art version of you writing Wash Me on a dirty car. The one that really caught our eye was from Fabian Bertschinger.
7. BMW M1 (Andy Warhol)
The BMW Art Car project has been around since 1975, boasting a who’s who list of artist who have worked on a Bimmer Art Car which have been either raced or used for advertising. Our favorite is clearly this one by Andy Warhol, who painted this one by hand.
