MAJOR RECALL: 2011-2016 Toyota Sienna and over 680,000 Fords deemed defective

In the span of two days, automotive giants Toyota and Ford have announced recalling over a million minivans and sedans from their respective model lines.

On December 2, Auto Blog reported that Ford is recalling a total of 680,872 Fusions (2013-2016), Mondeos (2015-2016), and Lincoln MKZs (2013-2015) due to their front driver-side and passenger-side seat belt pretensioners not having enough insulation. The defect lessens the efficiency of the seat belts in restraining occupants.

As of press time, two accidents and two injuries related to the recall have been reported.

A Ford representative said affected owners can bring in their cars for check-up while waiting for notifications to be sent via email during the week of January 16, the same week fix from dealers are expected to be available.

Two days after reporting Ford’s recall announcement, Auto Blog also made public Toyota’s plan to take out 744,437 Sienna minivans from years 2011 through 2016 in the United States. The recall is caused by sliding doors that do not close properly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this raises a safety concern as doors that do not open when commanded (i.e., getting stuck or “frozen”), can unbolt unexpectedly, possibly while the vehicle is in motion.

While this may be the case, neither injuries nor deaths caused by this glitch have been reported.

Owners affected by the recall are expected to receive notices by January 21, 2017. If you own a 2011-2016 Sienna, you may contact Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331. The number for this recall is G04.
