Common Reasons Why People Fail Their Driving Tests

By on August 26, 2016

Many fail but others come out of it victoriously. We’re talking about passing your driving test. Just like other tests, we got you a cheat-sheet to give you a headstart on what to expect and your “pointers to review.”

  • Inappropriate Speed – We’re not just talking about going too fast; this covers going too slow as well. Always maintain a suitable speed and do not hold up traffic. Driving too slow is considered a driving fault.

  • Turn along the road – This refers to turning your car around when faced with a roadblock or dead end using forward and reverse gears.  To pass this, you should be able to carry out this maneuver showing good control with all-round observation, including rear-view check on reversing, which most of the time, is being missed.

  • Lack of Steering control – You will need to steer at the correct time at the speed you’re driving with to maintain control and road position. Mounting and dismounting the curb and not following the contour of the curb will also result in faults in this area.

  • Reverse around the corner – The examiner will ask you to stop before a side road on the left. You will be required to reverse into the road on your left, keeping reasonably close to the curb. To pass, make sure to check that the side road is safe to reverse into – clear of parked cars, pedestrians, etc. Do not reverse onto the main road or where there’s no entry sign.

  • Incorrect positioning – This should be easy. To pass, make sure you’re in the middle of the lane, avoid straddling lanes, getting into the correct lane early when necessary, and look out for road signs and markings.

  • Use of signals – One of the most common reasons for failing the test is failing to signal correctly, which includes failing to apply a signal in good time so other road users have enough warning of your intentions or a confusing signal that was applied or simply not applying one when necessary.

  • Use of mirrors – One of the top reasons why many fail their driving test is because they fail to look in the mirrors when necessary. Remember that mirrors are being checked when you change speed and direction, and don’t forget to act according to what you see.

  • Reverse parking – You’ll notch up a fault in this area if you reposition to correct a loss of control or accuracy. A complete misjudgement or significant loss of control will count as a serious fault. The key to a successful reverse parking is to maintain the 90-degree angle. Keep that in mind. And yes, lots of practice!

  • Observation at junctions – The number one reason why people fail their driving test is due to the lack of observation at junctions to enable them to emerge or turn into a new road safely. You must give priority where necessary and not cause anyone to change speed or direction. You must stop at signs to allow proper observation. Just like crossing the street, always make sure it’s safe before proceeding.
