Despite being the world’s second-largest carmaker in the world, Toyota has kept mum about its plans on anything autonomous. However, that’s news of the past. Toyota is now finally speaking its piece.

The automotive giant recently announced its partnership with California-based tech company Nvidia to manufacture cars that will employ artificial intelligence to operate, which is bound to be available in the market in the “next few years.”

Nvidia will provide hi-tech chips from its computing platform called Drive PX to this new generation of Toyotas. This technology allows for better synergy among car and passenger as it recognizes and copes with myriad scenarios encountered on the road.

According to Nvidia, the processor integrated in the Drive PX called Xavier is so compact it can fit in your hand but capable enough to collect data from cameras, radar, lidar, and various sensors at the speed of 30 trillion deep learning operations per second.

The Drive PX is used globally by more than 200 companies. In fact, Tesla’s autonomous vehicles have been using Nvidia chips since last year.

“Toyota has worked on autonomous driving technologies for over 20 years with the aim of reducing traffic fatalities to zero as an ultimate goal,” said Toyota general manager Ken Koibuchi. “Through this collaboration, we intend to accelerate the development of autonomous driving systems that are even more safe and capable.”

The future is coming to the Toyota Way.
