If you think the latest Cars sequel will be like the previous movie, think again. With the new trailer and movie tagline: “From this moment, everything will change,” it seems like Disney is ready to take the franchise to a new darker and more serious place.

The first movie was an absolute hit for kids (and even some older audiences) and was no doubt a significant contribution to spreading the love for automobiles all over the world. But for those who aren’t familiar with the franchise, here’s a brief background: Cars was an American computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios (Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, etc.) and released by Walt Disney Pictures whose story revolves around anthropomorphic race cars battling out for the Piston Cup championship. Some prominent American actors lent their voices to the first film including Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin, Michael Wallis, George Carlin, Paul Dooley, Jenifer Lewis, Guido Quaroni, Michael Keaton, Katherine Helmond, and John Ratzenberger, with special participation of real life car drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher, and car enthusiast Jay Leno. The film premiered on May 26, 2006 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. Its huge success in the box office paved way for the release of related merchandise that brought Disney-Pixar an estimated $10 billion in retail sales in the 5 years since its release.

Its sequel, Cars 2, was released on June 24, 2011, grossing a whopping $562 million worldwide. This time, the main character Lightning McQueen was challenged by the Italian formula race car Francesco Bernoulli to complete the World Grand Pix in Tokyo and Europe.

After 6 years of waiting, the 3rd installment of Cars is finally hitting theaters on June 16, 2017. The trailer started with a horrendous accident involving Lightning McQueen. We see a slow-motion shot of the car and debris flying in the air–which all looks so serious compared to the tone of the previous instalments. Will this be the end of, not just McQueen, but also the lighthearted vibe of the Cars franchise? We’re not really sure. What we do know is that this twist will surely bring buzz around the upcoming movie and, hopefully, not too much trauma to younger audiences.
