Electric vehicles or EVs are often wrongfully stereotyped as sacrificing practicality for being more environmentally friendly. But those familiar with EV technology know that EVs are actually quite utilitarian, especially in situations where carrying a tank full of flammable liquid is highly impractical. And if that situation involves defusing an IED, bomb defusal experts can now rely on the TORQ light tactical electric vehicle (LTEV) to safely get them through and out of danger.

TORQ, a Birmingham-based company specializing in hunting vehicles, unveiled the new rapid-response LTEV in early October under its tactical brand, TORQ Defense Systems. The LTEV can transport an EOD technician wearing a full bomb suit as well as necessary equipment to their destination at speeds of up to 30mph. But what makes this vehicle truly stand out is its 18-hp brushless AC motor and a 48-volt battery which can be recharged through a standard 110-volt electrical outlet. The motor makes it possible for the LETV to safely enter environments where flammable chemicals can prove lethal, while the quiet electric powertrain allows it to travel more more stealthily.

Other features of the LETV include a quick-release steering wheel, fire suppression system, a 1.5-ton winch, and a high intensity LED spotlight. For storage, the vehicle has a rear bin that can carry a portable X-ray system while its two spindle arms can hold 2,500-ft spools of shock tube detonator cord and paracord.

“We designed this purpose-built LTEV with input from EOD and law enforcement industry experts as well as manufacturers of specialized EOD tools and products” said Rick D’Andrea, Director of Sales and Marketing.  “Our goal was to develop a highly capable tactical vehicle that can alleviate EOD technician fatigue and may also serve to reduce a first responders time-on-target.”

The LETV’s modular frame can also be configured to further accommodate other gear, a feature which TORQ says makes the vehicle suitable for other applications, such as search and rescue, hazmat, and SWAT duties.

“The open design of this lightweight and stealthy task oriented vehicle easily lends itself to situational customization for a wide array of narrowly defined missions and applications” said TORQ Defense Systems President Steve Brown.

So if you ever find one of these electric vehicles rolling out of your local police station, keep in mind that EVs are not just great for the environment but also a practical choice in times of emergency.
