Watch Bristol Motor Speedway Turn into an NCAA Football Stadium

The Bristol Motor Speedway in northeast Tennessee is no stranger to huge crowds eager to see cars blaze past at 150 miles an hour, but what happens when it hosts the largest live crowd in NCAA in history? That’s what happened recently when nearly 157,000 football fans flocked to Bristol to watch the University of Tennessee Volunteers go face to face against Virginia Tech Hokies.

So how does one turn a sprawling NASCAR track into a college football venue? The folks at the Bristol Motor Speedway gave us a glimpse of that with this time-lapse video of the transformation process.

Transforming the Speedway certainly wasn’t an easy feat. Aside from covering up the .533-mile concrete oval, the organizers had to build a proper football field, add 5,000 more seats to the track, mount 130 light towers, and clear out the lower level areas for use as team and referee locker rooms. And don’t forget the 700-ton custom-made Colossus video board and the 540,000-watt audio system either. Overall, the transformation took 19 days of painstaking work to make the track ready for game night.
