Nissan to Recall 134,000 Vehicles for Fire Risk

If you have just purchased a new Nissan Maxima or Murano, you may want to give the dealership a call; Nissan has announced it will recall approximately 134,000 2016-2017 Maxima sedans, 2015-2017 Murano crossovers, and 2016-2015 Murano hybrids with Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) due to a potential fire hazard.

According to the recall, the issue lies with the anti-lock brake actuator pump that comes as part of the ICC. The pump may leak brake fluid onto an internal circuit board under the vehicle’s hood, causing an electrical short that may lead to fire in the engine bay. A Nissan spokesman told Automotive News there have been no reported injuries or deaths related to the defect, although there have been several media reports of vehicles suffering from “thermal damage”, which is basically PR-speak for the car either smoldering or catching fire.

The fix involves the removal of the faulty ABS actuator and replaced free of charge at the dealership. Nissan said it will start the recall in the coming weeks and is “currently preparing parts”. For the meantime, NHTA issued a warning stating that if the ABS light stays on for more than ten seconds after engine start, stop driving the car, park it outdoors and away from flammable objects, and have it towed to the nearest Nissan dealer immediately.
