Cars That Are Faster Than They Look

When it comes to speed and power, you shouldn’t judge a car by its looks much like you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. There are some cars out there that are much faster than they look. Sometimes known as ‘sleepers,’ these seemingly innocent-looking vehicles can leave you in the dust!

Here are some of the best ‘sleepers’ we know:

  • Subaru Forester 2.5XT

This crossover, like its Impreza brethren, packs plenty of punch. See that hood scoop? It may not look much, but it IS functional, unlike the ones you see in most other cars. In capable hands, the Forester can go from 0-60mph in about 6.6 seconds.

  • Ford Taurus SHO

While the current Taurus SHO can also be considered a sleeper, we decided to go with the old one. It looks like your run of the mill, 4-door grocery-getter, yes? Except this one has a Yamaha V6 that produces around 220HP, which is good enough to propel it from 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds. Not bad for a Taurus.

  • Toyota Rav4 V6

Another crossover? Yep. The Rav4, which is usually described as bland and unexciting, actually packs a bit of a wallop. That V6 can take the Rav4 from 0-60mph in around 6.7 seconds.

  • GMC Syclone

If you didn’t know better, you’d think the Syclone was just a regular Sonoma. But there was nothing regular about the Syclone. It was the quickest and fastest production truck sold at the time. How quick? Oh, just 0-6mph in 5.3 seconds quick! Car and Driver memorably pitted the Syclone against the Ferrari 348ts in a drag race back in the day, and the Syclone actually won. That’s probably all you need to know.

  • Buick Grand National

Okay, we admit, this one isn’t really a sleeper. However, you can’t really say it looked fast, right? Look at all those edges, those angles, the car just doesn’t look like its aerodynamic. Of course, the shape didn’t really hinder the Buick, as it used brute force to punch through the air and get from 0-60 in about 6.0 seconds.

  • Chrysler 300 SRT8

It’s big, and unlike other SRT models, it doesn’t have an obnoxious body kit or loud decals. What it does have is a 6.1-liter Hemi that takes it from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds. For a car as big as the 300, that’s impressive.
