The Unwritten Rules of Driving

By on February 18, 2015

There are a lot of written rules in driving, some universal, some differ from state to state. Some make a lot sense, some were well thought-out, and some are just plain silly. Going against them , of course, is not up to debate. However, there are certain things called unwritten rules. While you won’t be penalized for not following them, it’s simply a matter of courtesy and, as the great American philosophers, Bill S. Preston, Esquire  and Ted “Theodore” Logan said, “Be excellent to each other.”

There are many, and again, they do differ from place to place. Here are just a few some of us here at APW can agree upon:

1. Don’t be “That Guy” when Parking – Seriously, the lines are there for a reason. Park evenly and you’ll probably get less dings than trying to stick to side to avoid them in the first place.

2. Don’t be a Bully. – If you drive an SUV or pickup truck, that does not make you part of some master race of motorists. Respect the vehicular choices of others. This also applies to those with less then four wheels. They have as much right to drive on the road as you do.

3. Be a Good Samaritan – If you see anyone with broken down car, and you have enough time, lend a hand. If it’s a car wreck or there are injuries, call 911 (stop first of course). REMEMBER: Only provide first aid if you’re trained to do so. You may be thinking to yourself, “This is how most horror movies start,” but this is real life.

4. Acknowledge Good Driving – A courtesy wave when someone lets you through first or lets you merge.  Whether or not this will encourage them to pay it forward or be better drivers, you do this because it’s the right thing to do.

5. The Pump Ain’t Your 2nd Home – Get in, get your gas, get out. Unless it’s a road trip or an empty pump. Your time is important but so is everyone else’s. If you’re going inside to buy something or use the restroom, move your car and let others peruse the pump.

6. Learn What the Left Lane is For – If you haven’t figured it out, it’s for passing. Get in, pass, then get out. Do not be this guy:

7. You Are Not Vin Diesel – Don’t challenge other drivers because you feel the need to feed your insecurities. There’s no money in it for you and you are endangering your life and those around you to feed your ego. And no, just wanting to see that dude’s awesome sports car hum is still not a valid excuse.
8. Go With the Flow – If the speed limit is 60 mph, try to say within 5-15 mph within that. It’s not really a matter of herd mentality but disruption of the flow increases the risk of causing pile-ups.

9. Always Leave a Note – Accidents happen. If you ding someone in the parking lot and they’re not there, leave a note. Treat others as you would like others to treat you. It’s not hard.

10. Be ready for the Toll Booth – If you know you’re heading towards an exit with a toll booth, be ready with that toll. It saves you time and it won’t put you in precarious situation of fiddling for change will driving.
