These Cars Have Awesome Nicknames

The best cars usually have great names that are either descriptive of their performance or are simply very cool. The most beloved cars, not necessarily the best, are often given awesome nicknames by their legions of fans.

Here, we list down some of the best car nicknames that we have come across:

Nissan Skyline GT-R, a.k.a Godzilla

The Australian motoring publication Wheels gave the Skyline its popular nickname way back in 1989 and for good reason. Like the giant lizard it was named after, the Skyline was extremely powerful and was feared by others. This really is a case of an awesome car having an equally awesome nickname!

Willys/Ford GPW, a.k.a. Jeep

Before it became an actual brand name, Jeep was a nickname given to the trucks used by the military from around the 1930’s. There are several different versions of the origin story of the name, none of which have been completely verified. One thing that we know for sure, however, is that it sounds perfect for what the vehicle (and now the brand) represents: off-roading in style!

Toyota AE86, a.k.a. Hachi-Roku

The AE86 was already popular even before it starred in the manga/anime series Initial D, where it was used for racing and tofu delivery (!) by its driver, Takumi Fujiwara. Although it sounds very exotic, Hachi-Roku actually just means eight-six in Japanese. The AE86 is the inspiration for the current Toyota 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ.

1971 Ford Mustang Sportsroof/1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, a.k.a. Eleanor

Two cars share the Eleanor nickname: the 1971 Ford Mustang Sportsroof (styled as a 1973) from the original Gone in 60 Seconds film, and the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 from the remake. Whether you like the original or the one from the remake, there’s just no denying that Eleanor is just a cool nickname for a car.

Pontiac GTO, a.k.a. The Goat

Pontiac people said GTO didn’t actually mean anything, but they were probably lying. The name was most likely inspired by the very successful Ferrari 250 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato). As for the Goat nickname, it probably came from people wanting to pronounce the car’s name in one syllable instead of saying all three letters…and yeah, it sounds cool.

Volkswagen Type 1, a.k.a. The Beetle

The car was known internally as the Type 1 and was marketed simply as the Volkswagen. People in Germany started calling it Käfer, which is German for beetle. It totally made sense (because the car IS shaped like a beetle), so the company officially adopted the name and gave us one of the most iconic and beloved cars ever made.
