9 Deadliest Roads In The World

The deadliest roads in the world have one thing in common: they are known for numerous car accidents and most of them have led to death. Driving along these roads is challenging and requires a great measure of focus and patience. Here is a list of some of the deadliest roads in the planet and see if you think you have what it takes to drive them!

 

9. Commonwealth Avenue in the Philippines

At number 9 is the Commonwealth Avenue of the Philippines also known locally as the “killer highway.” This road and others in the Philippines claim 6,941 deaths annually. These accidents are mostly caused by extreme heavy traffic and lack of law enforcement. Here is an example of traffic at Commonwealth Ave. in the Philippines:

It’s common to see people jaywalking, which leads to accidents. Just check out this dude crossing the highway like a boss—in a bad way.

8. Bruce Highway in Australia

Taking the eighth place is Bruce highway in Queensland, Australia where annual road deaths total 1,363. Bruce Highway is known as the most dangerous road in Australia because of drivers hazardously overtaking each other. Needless to say, never overtake unless you’re completely sure that you and the cars you’re overtaking are in safe positions. Do not attempt to do this deliberately or not:

Taking the seventh place is the world’s longest road–the Pan-American Highway located in Alaska, USA. This road and others in the USA have a combined annual road deaths of 2,889. Careless and annoying drivers will be the least of your worries while driving through this road because what you have to look out for are landslides, high temperatures, steep drop offs, and impassable sections during the wet season. This road will take you through mountains, jungles, deserts and even glaciers. Check out this video of a bus driving through one of the sections of the Pan-American Highway. 6.  Pasubio Road in Italy.

On the sixth place is Strada Delle Gallerie or the Pasubio road in Italy where annual road deaths total 4,237. This road has breathtaking scenery but the downside is it has deadly cliff drops.

Now, the most dangerous part has been closed for vehicles, but some are still crazy enough to pass through. Would you risk driving through the closed section of this road?

 

5. Settlers Freeway in South Africa

Taking the fifth place is the N2 road or Settlers Freeway in South Africa. The country has annual road deaths of a whopping 13,768. Apparently, the main cause of these deaths is not the road itself but careless drivers and over-speeding vehicles. Driving along this road requires patience and anger management. Maybe those drivers along Settlers Freeway should watch this video to know the risk of over speeding

4.  BR-116 in Brazil

Taking fourth place is the BR-116 road in Brazil AKA “the highway of death.” It is the second longest road in Brazil and runs 2,700 miles. Brazil has annual road deaths of 37,594 and this road definitely contributes a lot to that number. The danger of this road is that it is poorly maintained and it’s close to the mountain’s edge. Plus, you have to be conscious of gangs and armed bandits that could attack you while you’re driving since it’s uncommon for the police to patrol the area. 3.  Nanga Parbat pass in Pakistan

In the third place is the Nanga Parbat pass or Fairy meadows road in Pakistan, which has annual road deaths of 5,192. The dangers of this road are the unstable and narrow mountains and the lack of barriers that should prevent vehicles from falling off the cliff. Driving along this road will make you feel like you are in a roller coaster. Watch this video to know why:

The second runner up is Zoji La or Zoji pass in India. The country has a staggering total of 105, 725 annual road deaths. According to Driving Experiences, this road is dangerously narrow, often muddy or icy, gravel laden, and is littered with crashed cars and overturned buses. This road is also the second highest pass in the Himalayan and runs at 3,528 meters by 11, 575 ft. Check out this video to see how steep and narrow this road is:

 

1.  North Yungas Road in Bolivia

At the top spot is the North Yungas road in Bolivia, which some call “the road of death.” Bolivia has annual road deaths of 1,294 and North Yungas’ victims add heavily to that total. While Bolivia’s annual road deaths is small compared to others, North Yungas is widely considered the deadliest road of all. There was even an estimate that 200-300 travellers were killed every year along the road! Who wouldn’t be afraid if the road is only 3 meters wide and with sheer drops up to 1000m?
